Cafe Huntington

Feeding The Creative Spirit

Category : June 2010 Proposals

Third Presenter: Joe Cox

Joe’s project consists of several aspects which all tie into his first solo exhibition. The hope is to be done with the art work by August and have the show scheduled, up, and running by Sept. Most people that have talked to Joe about his research have expressed to him ways in which he could estimate the total cost of this project.  However, Joe’s contention is that the amount of money raised will determine what doors can or can’t be opened. Joe claims to be very resourceful and will see his project to the end (if any) regardless of the amount raised…it just may take more time.

100% of the money will go to this project. Luckily, Joe has no administrative costs. Most of the money will go to the making of the books for sale at the show. Joe would also spend money on the vinyl cutouts, paint, supplies and everything to manipulate the space in order to bring a sense of completion to the whole show and not just art hanging on a blank wall.

This project is important to Joe personally. He’s 32 yrs old and has tried for years to do what he thought society or his parents or peers thought should be done. Realization came  a few years ago about the importance of communication and Joe found art to be his preferred mode of communication. He believes that people who can’t communicate effectively resort to deviant behavior to get their point across. Joe admittedly did this for years before he realized what art was for him. He has put it down for a few years. Coming from a low to middle class family art wasn’t a reasonable career path.

This grant money will help determine the amount of time and resources that can be lent to the completion of this project. Joe has been working on it slowly but surely and his financial resources are limited. Joe is a student, husband, and father to three children. With school being out, he is  determined to make his way this summer totally on art or in pursuit of it. Joe has planned on taking this time to complete the projects he wanted to finish but were stifled by schoolwork, so Cafe Huntington was naturally right up his alley and is excited to hear there are opportunities like this in our own community.

Second Presenter: Doug Brooks

Doug would like to use the funding for a Chapter’s Art & Drama Expo. The presence of arts and entertainment in the downtown area should be something that is ongoing, diverse and innovative in its execution.  The plan is to showcase a collaboration of dance, monologue, poetry, acting and song to tell positive and inspirational stories.

The money will be used for venue rental, featured guest artist honorarium, and cash bar/finger foods, decorations, etc.

Doug believes by giving the local talent a positive and clean platform to express themselves artistically, we can improve the lifestyles of those who inspire us to dream.  If we can also invite one artist in the entertainment business to aid in marketing and mentor local artist then we can take arts and entertainment to another level in this city.

The grant will allow me to provide a small honorarium to guest poets and singers from NY, DC, and VA and provide the hospitality to them so that they can network with local artists to help take their artistic careers to the next level.  Hospitality would be free venue, quality food and beverage.  Right now Doug has a spoken word artist published out of Brownstone publishing NY that has agreed to come for a small donation.
