Feeding The Creative Spirit

Category : General

First Presenter : Ron Caviani (Tri-State Youth Orchestra)

Project Description:
As the conductor of the Tri-State Youth Orchestra we are raising funds to add instruments toour percussion section. Many instrumetns that we need to purchase now are quite expensive and require significant funds.

Project Importance:
The youth orchestra contrinues to grow because of area businesses, membership fees and concert attendance. Students learn orchestral literature from all musical periods written by all the great composers. They perform music from every nationality of varying levels of difficulty. We perform 5-6 concerts each season and with that comes hours of dedicated rehearsal by each student in a large ensemble of kindred hearts. Students learn the discipline of practice, interpretation fo music, abstract thinking and problem solving at the highest level. They also learn and interpret musical terms in various languages.

How Money Will Be Used:
Funds acquired will be added to the funds already in place toward purchasing percussion instruments such as Orchestral Chimes, xylophone, crash cymbals and gong with stands. We have found ways already to purchase a set of timpani, bass drum and various smaller less expensive instruments. The youth orchestra has been inexistence for 13 years and has included hundreds of area music students as members. They have performed in the area for 13 years and their venue has included City Hall Auditorium, Smith Hall, Paramount Arts Center, Ironton High, Cabell Midland High, the church at Heritage Farms and ARTS Renaissance. We are the only youth orchestra in this area and completely independent from MU and HSO. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to the perpetuation of orchestral literature performed by the area’s leading music students.

3 Month Goal:
Money received adds to the ability to purchase the percussion equipment necessary to “hear” all the voices of the composition. Many times the orchestra has borrowed percussion instruments frm area schools but only for the concert, never rehearsal. It is appreciated that schools allow the orchestra to use such expensive instgruments but the total experience of the music is never fully realized except during the concert. The purchase of the instrumetns is not just for a few months, it is for years to come, for the enjoyment fo the orchestra members and the audience that attend the concerts.

Artists in show

With the December dinners we are once again trying something new! We will have 2 local artist show some of their work during our event.

Our First artist is Annette Boston. She was born in Huntington WVa.

I am a self-taught artist, and believe that it is a gift from God. I made
alot of wrong choices in my life, that put me in horrific situations.  I used
painting to cope survive and express what I could not say.  I will have a showing
at the Heritage Station Dec 11 and a show in Feb at the gallery 842.
Support your local artist, come see what we can do.
Our Second artist is Amber Maire. She a local artist from Huntington, WV.

Fourth Presenter: Eric Falquero

Project Description:
The Huntington Pulse is local start up source for alternative news in the community, that has produced two successful issues so far – and is working hard to become as stable and useful to the community as possible. We donate a large percentage of our profits to homeless services. To date we have raised $120 which we are currently working with the Harmony House, part of the Cabell Huntington Coalition for the Homeless to find the best use for. This is a small, but promising start.

Project Importance:
Readers have given us various responses for why they think the paper is something Huntington needs, but we have yet to receive any negative feedback. We work to provide a voice for as many people as possible, and provide exposure for as many organizations and events to promote an active community, and be a stepping stone for readers to find more things that interest them, and more ways to help better their own community.

How Money Will Be Used:
The money we receive will go directly to printing costs. Currently, while still waiting for the two of our largest grants to clear, are indebted to the Herald Dispatch for our issue 2 printing. This will let us end the year squared up with them and allow us to continue on with production of issue 3. We are currently increasing the size and quality of the paper, and dropping down to monthly production – so that we will still be able to present a large amount of important community information, but will need less money and thus be more practical and reliable.

3 Month Goal:
The money will make possible the printing of our next issue – which would release at the beginning of January next year. While it would allow us to print within the next couple of weeks – we would be releasing at the same time that a large chunk of our current audience leaves for the holidays – and thus would fall on deaf ears of sorts, and we feel waste the valuable opportunity the grant money provides. So in actuality, this grant would make us solvent for the next 2 months, while we continue to sell advertisements to support ourselves and bring in the same quality news content.

Thrid Presenter: Karen Scalf

Project Description:
My project is a self-made CD of original songs, and a new web page to promote my music.

Project Importance:
It takes a supportive community to allow an artist to create freely without boundaries.  It would be presumptuous of me to say that my songs will better the community or change someone’s life. But in essence, all music and poetry has that potential, for it speaks to people’s hearts and souls.

This CD, titled Ghosts and Rivers, is my personal catharsis of loss in exchange for hope.  If a few people find a meaningful connection to a few of the songs, then art will have served its purpose.  A community who embraces its artists is a better community.

How Money Will Be Used:
With the CAFE funds, I will most likely be able to complete the whole CD package.
This includes materials for:
*the CD pressing
*the biodegradable CD jacket,
*the jacket design, printing and insert
*the web page start-up and promotion

3 Month Goal:
The CAFE grant will be an emotionally affirming and financial boost.  I will use the funds to research and secure the most economical materials and promotional aids available for my CD.  With the completion date goal of 3 months, I will delve into intense recording sessions, website and CD cover design.

Second Presenter: Raine Klover (Tres Arts)

Project Description:
Soon to be located in downtown Huntington, Tres Arts will be a community-spirited art gallery that provides Tri-State artists and craftspeople with a quality retail showroom and classroom space. Class offerings will create an additional level of engagement between artist-teachers and the greater community. Tres Arts will also host a lively mix of art openings, special events, and art-related community groups and will be an active participant in local community events. Tres Arts will offer a dynamic mix of traditional and contemporary fine art, jewelry, crafts, and artisanal products at a variety of price points. This mix will entice everyone from the first-time gallery goer to the seasoned art collector. These goods will be made by artists and craftspeople who live in the local region and throughout West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. We believe that arts and crafts are equally valuable, and that all mediums, techniques, and styles are equally vital to the human experience. An
d that everyone, regardless of income or socio-economic status should be able to experience fine art and craft firsthand.

Project Importance:
This project will fill a large hole in the Huntington cultural community. We have a wonderful museum, two galleries that are part of Marshall University, and a small artists’ co-operative. But we do not have a full-fledged retail gallery. This space will also offer art classes, sponsor arts-related community groups, and have monthly events.

How Money Will Be Used:
I will be using the money to bankroll some pre-startup costs. These expenses include printing temporary business cards and other marketing collateral, incorporation fees, domain registration, website setup, and mailing list creation. I plan to incorporate in January 2011 and hope to open in late spring or early summer depending on space availability.

3 Month Goal:
I am planning on using my tax refund to finance the startup costs. Receiving this money now will allow me to get the ball rolling on the above mentioned items. I am currently hoping to open at Heritage Station and am already in talks with them regarding retail space.

First Presenter: Michael Valentine (Brainwrap Productions)

Project Description:
Seth Martin and Friends is an Internet video series produced in Huntington, West Virginia. It has been in the planning stages since January of 2009. We have been writing, designing, and organizing our first series. Recently, we released a run of shorts to test our production techniques viewable at http://www.youtube.com/sethmartinfriends. Our desire is to move into full-scale production of an entire season of 12 original half-hour episodes.  Seth Martin and Friends is an absurd sitcom wherein Seth Martin (played, coincidentally, by local actor Seth Martin) is a lovable loser unable to scrape together the resources to move out of his parent’s home. He spends most of his time in the basement trying to figure out what to do with his life with the help of a cadre of puppet pals. The cast of characters includes Trace Cherokee (a struggling Country and Western singer-songwriter), Norman (Seth’s irascible next door neighbor), Super Ultra Man (a superhero), Arthur (a cardinal always looking for a way to make a quick buck), Chappy (a Chapstick), and the ghost of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.  Premises for planned episodes include Seth learning to become a professional wrestler, Seth and the puppets start a band, a supervillain replaces Trace Cherokee with a robot, Seth travels back in time to when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, Seth has a run in with some pontoon boat pirates, Seth’s more successful twin brother drops in for a visit, Seth discovers a genie and is granted three wishes, Seth and the puppets try not to interrupt when Seth’s dad’s boss comes over for dinner, Seth goes on a date, Arthur directs a play telling the story of his life, Seth becomes embroiled in vicious mudslinging when he runs against Chappy for mayor of the basement, and Seth and the puppets investigate a haunted house.

Project Importance:
This project represents a unique comic voice. We have worked hard to create a tone and style that is our own. As a group, we have been working on original comedy since 2005. Seth Martin and Friends represents the ultimate expression of our comedic point of view.

This project also represents an opportunity spot light local actors, musicians, and personalities as guest stars. There will be ample opportunities  for local film makers to become involved in all aspects of the production. Seth Martin and Friends will function as a beehive of creativity that is published on the Internet, via local cable access, local film festivals, and whatever other venues will have us.

How Money Will Be Used:
If awarded, we will use the money from CAFE Huntington to purchase a studio light kit. We have been constructing a studio in a piece of rental property so that we can produce our show. Purchasing a light kit will increase our production value incredibly and make our show capable of looking its best. We will purchase the cans and fixtures as well as expendables like color gels, bulbs, diffusion, and scrims to construct a lighting rig to meet our needs.

3 Month Goal:
Receiving this money will help our project immediately. We are prepared to purchase the lighting kit as soon as we can scrape the money together. Having access to the kit will greatly accelerate our pre-production, and make it easier for us to begin filming sequences for our first episode.

We have constructed the walls that house the main set of our studio. It is painted and decorated. Our puppets are complete and our scripts are written. All that’s left are a few technical details and we’ll be ready to shoot. Having the money to purchase this lighting hardware will be a big step.

Over the course of the next three months, with lights we will be able to likely film, edit, and release our first two complete thirty minute episodes and make serious gains towards more quickly producing the remaining ten.

Owning these lights will help us during these months and future months over the course of years as we work on different film productions.

Dec 7, 2010 – The Sixth CAFE Dinner

Normally, around this time of the month, we are just about to get together for our dinner.  However, because Thanksgiving is this week, and Chrismas also arrives late in the month of Dec, we are mixing things up a bit for a holiday CAFE event which will take place on Dec 7, 2010 at the Cabell County Public Library Downtown which is located at 455 9th Street Plaza.  Dream Lester – of  ”Dream Cooks Catering” has generously offered her time and ingredients to create a Spaghetti dinner.  This is the second time, in four months, that Dream has volunteered to make the dinner and we really appreciate her time and dedication to the cause.

As always the event will start at 6pm and the price of admission is $10.  You can buy a ticket from one of the CAFE Huntington volunteers at the weekly Chat-n-Chews at the Frederick (starting next week) OR you can buy online using the handy form at the bottom of this post.  If you buy a ticket electronically they are handled in a “will-call” fashion so just show up and let us know who you are and we’ll confirm you bought at ticket.

SOLD OUT

October’s Results

Last night’s CAFÉ was a great event! Thanks to all of the dinners that braved the terrible rain storms and threats of tornados. Unfortunately the dinner was sold out, and we did have to turn people away at the door. I strongly encourage people to buy their tickets in advance! If you can’t buy them online please call to make arrangements for payment and delivery.

CAFÉ had some big news it’s self to announce last night. We have finally received a cooperate sponsor! At the dinner all present got to witness a beautiful collaboration between create business and support for the arts. The Founders for the Vandalia Research, Inc. have sponsored our fee at the Cabell County Library in Downtown Huntington for the next 12 months. This was a big burden that has been lifted. Thus guaranteeing the success of this event for the next year!We had several amazing proposals once again. The street band Qiet, presented on their project of gig swaping and street music. To learn more about this local musical group check out their facebook page. April Morrison presented on a new series of paintings she needed assistance to produce. A collaborative called Brainwrap Productions, that has create Seth Martin and Friends which is an Internet video series produced right here in Huntington, West Virginia. You can check them out at http://www.youtube.com/sethmartinfriends. Huntington Pulse was back soliciting fund for their street newspaper. The first addition is out now! To learn more about this project check out their facebook page.

Our Winners who walked away with $625.00 from ticket sales were Shelly Keeney and Dominique Wong from the Yellow Goat Farm. Shelly and Dominique are using the CAFE money to take a class on how to turn their goats into a working dairy goat farm. They hope to start selling locally produced milk, cheese, and yogurts at our local markets here in West Virginia soon. If you’d like to learn more about them check out their web page at www.yellowgoatfarm.com . This class is the first step in many to make that dream come true!

Ian Thornton, last month’s winner, stopped by to give an update about how the CAFÉ funds contributed to the first annual Huntington Art and Music Festival.

All and all a great night! Thanks to our sponsor for helping us help creative project in Huntington for the next year to come!

Fifth Presenter: Shelly Keeney & Dominique Wong

Project Description:
We(Shelly Keeney& Dominique Wong), would like to attend a three day hands on course for advanced cheese-making and business course. This is three day hands on course taught by Peter Dixon, dairy foods consultant and training center for Farmstead cheese-making.  Mr. Dixon is also a dairy foods specialist for Land O Lakes international. The class teaches about milk quality, ingredients, processing, techniques and requirements for aging cheeses, and how to establish a business as a Farmstead or Artisan cheese maker. We will also attend lectures to provide understanding of basic milk and cheese chemistry, the art of aging cheese, and how to design and operate a Cheese Making business.

Project Importance:
Attending this Cheese making/Business course will help us with our goal, which is to establish a small micro-dairy right here in the Tri-State area. We believe in a local sustainable food system. That is, buying foods that are produced as close to home as possible. Our goal is to provide the community with clean, fresher than anything in the supermarket cheese. We also want others in our community to know how there food goes from farm to table.

How Money Will Be Used:
The money will be used to help pay for an Artisan Cheese Making and Business course offered through Ohio State University Extension. It will take place in Circleville, Ohio which is a two hour drive from Huntington. The class fee is 400.00 per person for three days, with a total of 800.00 for the two of us.

3 Month Goal:
The grant money will pay for a Cheese Making/Business course that will be offered on December 6-8 in Circleville, Ohio. We will take what we have learned from the class and apply it to our business venture by research and education. That is, visiting existing dairies and working with our local dairy extension agency on developing a plan of action in the start up of a small Mirco-Dairy Business.
